Dog Ownership Education and Enforcement
The Park Board, Vancouver Police and Animal Control have teamed-up to educate the community, raise awareness about being responsible and respectful dog owners and to enforce the dog by-laws. A coordinated education program was rolled-out to inform all dog owners on why it is important to respect the leash by-laws, pick up after their dog and to licence their family pet. A by-law enforcement initiative, with uniformed police and animal control officers assisted by Park Board staff has started at various park locations and on beaches to support this. Fines will be issued to offenders to encourage compliance with the rules. One of the most common complaints to the Park Board and to City Hall relates to dogs. There are an estimated 50,000 dogs in the city but only about 30% are licensed and about the same percent do not pick up after their pets. In all, there are 31 off-leash parks in Vancouver for well-behaved canines. Responsible dog ownership helps dogs, dog lovers and non-dog lovers co-exist happily.
Good Dog Decorum - Dog Off-Leash Code of Conduct
Please obey this code and encourage others to do the same:
Be sure your dog has a current and visible license (this will help to ensure adequate services are provided for you and your dog). Leash your dog(s) while entering and exiting the dog off-leash zone (this web site and on-site signage will show you the off-leash zone(s)). Have a leash on-hand at all times. Respect off-leash times and the dog off-leash zone (some people want to be able to use the park without being bothered by off-leash dogs). Dogs are not allowed within 15 meters of children's playground equipment. Be sure you can see your dog at all times and pick up after it. Please help to ensure bag dispensers are full at all times. Ensure your dog is responsive to your commands (all off-leash dogs should be able to pass the Canadian Kennel Club - Canine Good Neighbour Program). Leash your dog if it exhibits aggressive behaviour. Don't allow your dog to dig holes. Keep early morning and evening noise to a minimum (in summer many people living next to the park sleep with their windows open).
